Here are some of the highlights selected by The Times’s TV critics: Television this year offered ingenuity, humor, defiance and hope. Recently Sid Meier's 1987 game Pirates!, a collection of minigames representing various aspects of pirate life - battling ships, treasure hunting, trading goods, sword fighting - was completely remade for the modern PC.ĭifferent gamers are excited by different rebirths, and for me the biggest thrill has been the restoration of one of the oddest and most original adventure games ever made, Pulse Entertainment's 1996 game Bad Mojo, newly dubbed Bad Mojo Redux. Occasionally something less ancient is resurrected, as when the original Resident Evil was refurbished with slicker graphics for the GameCube. Old arcade games like Centipede and Pac-Man have been released both for play on newer machines and in inexpensive devices you can plug into your television. Happily, games are sometimes resurrected. That is exactly what happens with computer games, where new technology is often incompatible with old games, turning great games into forgotten ones.

You could only watch entertainment produced in the last two or three years. No more reruns of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," no more old Marx Brothers movies. IMAGINE that every few years, the technology to broadcast television changed so radically that everything produced up until that time could no longer be shown.
